Education

The Durango School district features seven elementary schools, two middle schools and a comprehensive high school that serves approximately 4,700 students. Elementary schools include Animas Valley, Florida Mesa, Fort Lewis Mesa, Needham, Park, Riverview and Sunnyside. Middle schools include Escalante and Miller, while the city's teens attend Durango High School and Big Picture High School. Higher education is provided by Fort Lewis College, a public 4-year institution situated on a 500 foot bluff that overlooks downtown Durango, Southwest Colorado Community College, and San Juan College in nearby Farmington, NM.
